Abstract

The concept of degenerative osteoarticular disease presupposes an abnormality of hyaline cartilage, resulting in symptoms of varying intensity and impaired function. Hyaline cartilage is composed of 95% water and extracellular cartilage matrix and 5% chondrocytes. Chondrocytes have the longest cell cycle (similar to muscle and central nervous system cells). Cartilage health and function depends on compression, weight bearing and wear and tear (compression pumps fluid from the cartilage into the joint space, capillaries and venules, while releasing the cartilage to re-expand, hyperhydrate and absorb needed electrolytes
and nutrients. It is the result of an abnormal process between the destruction of cartilage and its repair. The cause of the onset of osteoarthritis is usually unknown, but sometimes it begins with tissue injury from mechanical damage (for example, an injury does not fracture in the region), transmission of inflammatory mediators from the synovium to the cartilage,
or defects in cartilage metabolism.Surgical intervention being necessary in many cases depending on the degree of involvement, the present case study demonstrated the surgical intervention in a lateral view.
